Heard something like this before? If you have even dipped your little toe into the vast ocean of online marketing, you will likely have come across this term, SEO. It’s the buzzword that everyone seems to be talking about.

So what actually is SEO?

SEO stands for:

 Search Engine Optimization

It’s basically about how well your online business is set up to be found by search engines such as Google. After the paid adverts, whether or not your business shows up on the first page of google search results is determined by Google’s complex algorithms & indexing methods.

Search engines are amazing tools, they are highly advanced machines but they are not ‘all knowing’....

If you want your business to show up on a search you MUST make it easy for Google to find you. This is not just as straightforward as having a website with an address and phone number! It can be way too easy to fall through the cracks, potentially missing out on thousands in revenue.

How do we do this?

We need to have a good understanding of what our potential clients will be typing into google and ensure that we are the best ranking option from Google’s point of view. We need to understand Google’s algorithms and arrange our online content to attract Google’s attention as well as our clients’. To do this there are many boxes that we need to check, a few examples being...

  • Using the right keywords - Online tools such as Semrush will help you to know what words & phrases Google is looking for.
  • Building links to your site - you can change your ranking massively by getting other quality websites, blogs or articles to link to your site.
  • Optimizing it for ease of use - have a site that is compatible with cell phones, easy to load and has a clean layout that is easy to navigate. Google prefers to show the most user-friendly websites.
  • Using GEO tagging - linking your images to a specific geographical location can verify to Google that you are a relevant supplier in your area.

These are just a few examples. To list them all would take a very long time AND the list of techniques is ever changing as Google constantly advances it’s algorithms.

How important is SEO really?

Well, here are 3 quick facts about search engine usage...

  • Fewer than 10% of people actually make it to the second page of search results- if they don’t find what they are looking for on the first page, they will immediately adjust their search criteria rather than checking out page 2, 3 or 4...so yes… you really want to show up on page 1!

  • The top 3 results listed below the paid ads get over 70% of the clicks - Simply put, if you aren’t in the top 3… you're missing out on HUGE amounts of business!

  • People choose Google over the address bar - many people even search for a specific web address instead of typing it into the address bar. They get very confused & upset when the business doesn’t show up. They might call your businesses to say  ‘Hey! your web address doesn’t work’ - or even worse… they might just move onto a competitor.

To conclude - considering the way that people use the internet these days, it is very important to ensure your website uses SEO techniques…of which there are many!

It’s a hard fact that the first page of a Google search is where most business comes from.

If your business doesn’t show up on google with a simple search of your product or service in your area… you want to get on that ASAP!
